Back when Microsoft released the near universally detested Windows 8 one of the driving philosophies was put everything at the users fingertips all the time. No more hunting through menus for that app you think you installed months ago, scrolling through three different folders filled with dozens of documents each to find your grandmothers apple pie recipe or looking for that specific setting you want to change. This concept became a part of Windows and is still with us today.
All the user would need to do is press the all-powerful Windows Key on the lower left side of your keyboard to bring up the Start Menu and start typing whatever it is you're looking for.
Grandmas apple pie recipe? Press the Windows Key and immediately start typing: appl and right about now you should be seeing results appear on your screen. Apps or programs containing the letters appl, internet search results containing appl and local documents containing the letters appl.
What does this mean? It means I don't have to go to My Documents folder and hunt through looking for a recipe that may or may not be in there. This method of accessing files means it doesn't matter where you put that file. It could be sitting in Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music or any other place on your computer and this search will bring it up. More impressive is the fact that this method of searching will look inside documents to bring up results. If you searched for "brown sugar" Windows would still show you the apple pie recipe because within that file are the words "brown" and "sugar."
Same for settings. Say you know you want to change the picture on your Desktop but can't remember exactly where that option is. Press the Windows Key and start typing: desk and you'll see all sorts of results pertaining to the desktop appear:
About two thirds of the way down we see a section labeled "Settings" and right under that we see "Choose your desktop background." How about that? No more clicking through menus and hunting for options trying to remember what things are called. Just click on "Choose your desktop background" and change your background.
Windows 8 was a dark time most of us would like to forget but some good things came from it. This method of searching your entire computer with a few simple keystrokes is one of those things.
